Makes me laugh

Maybe this is one of those "had to be there" things, but this makes me laugh every time I think of it. We went out to dinner with our friends Bill and Schmidty, and Schmidty's sister Susan. Schmidty sat across from me at the table, an empty chair to the left of her, and Bill in the next chair -- so he was kitty-corner to me.

We got on the subject of the eclipse, since it was happening the next day. Susan said she wondered if the tide would be affected by it. I thought not, since the tide is affected by the moon, not the sun. Bill said, no, the sun affects the tide, too, and began to explain more about that.

As he was talking, Schmidty languidly leaned over, took up her wine glass, and said, "I'm going to have another drink." It's making me laugh now. Her voice. Very obviously uninterested in the explanation. I cracked up and could hardly talk enough to say, "Thank you for sharing," in between my guffaws.

I said that we can always count on at least one moment of hilarity from Schmidty. She said, "I'll take that as the compliment I think it's meant to be." And it is.
